8th EUROPEAN SYMPOSIUM FOR THE PROTECTION OF THE NIGHT SKY - DARKSKY 2008 SECOND ANNOUNCEMENT - CALL FOR PAPERS The "8th European Symposium for the Protection of the Night Sky", DARKSKY 2008, will be held from Friday 22nd to Saturday 23rd of August at the Kuffner Observatory in Vienna, Austria. The meeting venue will be the charming, historic Kuffner Observatory in Vienna, Austria. A guided tour through the Kuffner Observatory and excursions to the Vienna University Observatory, to dark observing sites in Grossmugl and the Austrian Alps are planned. The scientific program will be divided in several sessions, dealing with light pollution monitoring, impact of light pollution on the environment, animals, human health, the climate and the nightsky. Other sessions deal with energy-efficient and low light pollution lighting technology, traffic safety, light pollution laws and finances. There is also a poster session planned. The symposium therefore reaches out especially to representatives of institutions for protection of natural heritage, mayors and authorities in charge for the lighting in municipalities, road experts, energy saving experts, manufacturers of lamps and power regulation equipment, lighting engineers, architects and landscape architects, biologists, medical experts, environmentalists and astronomers. The scientific program will be loosened up with breaks and the excursion to Grossmugl. Together with the conference dinner this will give plenty of opportunity for informal chats between the participants. REGISTRATION FEE, ACCOMMODATION and MEALS We decided not to cover accommodation and meals with the registration fee. Thus, we can keep the registration fee as low as possible. The registration fee is EUR 15,- for IDA members, EUR 35,- for members of other darksky advocate/activist associations and EUR 45,- for non-members. As a special offer non-members who want to join IDA can pay a registration fee of EUR 30,- including an one year regular IDA membership. The registration fee for authorities, government agencies, municipalities and administration departments is EUR 65,-/85,- (one day/two days). Please register early as there is a limited number of participants (due to limited space). Participants can select their accommodation and meals by themselves, according to their needs and budget. However, snacks and coffee will be available during the breaks. We recommend booking your accommodation and travelling tickets as soon as possible, as Vienna attracts many tourists in August. There is also a separate registration form for businessmen, manufacturers and/or sponsors available. CALL FOR PAPERS We invite you to contribute to DARKSKY 2008 by presenting a talk, a workshop or a poster. To submit your contribution, please use the online registration form available at the DARKSKY 2008 web site. All contributions must be submitted no later than July 14, 2008. Proceedings of the meeting will be published in form of a pdf document at the DARKSKY 2008 web site some time after the meeting.
